Tijuana Mayor Announces Would-Be Successor

Tijuana Mayor Jorge Hank Rhon says he's still waiting for his party's official nomination as candidate for Governor of Baja California. In the meantime, he introduced his would-be successor to the San Diego Association of Governments board of directors today. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the details.

Mayor Hank expects his PRI political party to name its candidate for Governor of Baja California in the next three weeks. If they pick him, Hank will be forced to step down as Mayor eight months short of completing his term. Mexican law bars candidates from campaigning while still in office. Hank would leave office during a critical time for Tijuana. The military is there to crack down on crime. The city's police force still doesn't have its guns. But Hank doesn't think he's leaving his city worse off.

Hank: My city is still secure. Its not a secure city. Its less insecure, let's call it that way, than two or three years ago.

Meanwhile, Hank says he'll leave the city in the hands of his pro-tem, Kurt Holnold. Holnold is an executive at two Mexican telecommunications companies. His family owns a chain of burger restaurants in Imperial County.  Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
