A couple of California senators want to beef-up vocational education in high schools across the state. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the details.
Senators Tom Torlakson and Mark Wyland want to get more money, hire more teachers, and recruit more businesses to create high school vocational classes. The leaders say the school-to-work programs will result in a stronger workforce. The senators visited San Diego's Construction Tech Academy. Last year's entire graduating class there either went to college or got into a job training program. Senior John Pranger plans to attend San Diego State next year to get more training as a carpenter.
Pranger: People told me that when you're 50, you're not going to want to swing a hammer. And that's a given. So I'm going to go into carpentry and start my own company.
District officials say high school students who enroll in vocational programs are more likely to pursue an education after they graduate. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
