SDG&E Reduces Estimates of Powerlink’s Customer Savings

San Diego Gas & Electric's controversial Sunrise Powerlink won't provide as much savings to customers as originally estimated. On Wednesday's Full Focus, We'll look into the revisions and the future o

Just over a week ago, San Diego Gas and Electric estimated that the Sunrise Powerlink would save its customers about $85 million a year. That was considerably down from the original estimate of $447 million. Then yesterday, the utility sent out a newsletter to its supporters bringing that figure back up to $220 million a year. Is that a good deal for San Diego rate payers and are the savings worth the change to the county's desert and backcountry areas?

Guests

  • Bill Powers, Chairman of the Border Power Plant Working Group
  • Jim Avery, SDGE Senior Vice President/Electric.  Responsible for procurement of natural gas and electric power, electric generation, transmission and distribution operations.

The California Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to approve or reject the Sunrise Powerlink project by year's end. If approved, its route will be decided by the commission. Next week, the commission and the Federal Bureau of Land Management will hold eight public meetings. Comments from the public are encouraged. Click here for the CPUC Public Meeting schedule.
