The state has set up “cooling centers” at fairgrounds statewide because of the expected high temperatures this week. They’re open until at least Friday in 13 counties, including Los Angeles, Sacramento, Fresno and Shasta. Governor Schwarzenegger has also encouraged Californians to look out for neighbors who might be affected by the heat.

Schwarzenegger: There’s a lot of vulnerable citizens out there who can’t help themselves many times – and animals - so let’s think about them also, let’s think about the older people that are helpless, a lot of the vulnerable citizens and also the animals – let’s protect them.

The state Office of Emergency Services advises people to drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous physical activity during the afternoon. The state has also set up a toll free number with information on protecting yourself from the heat. That’s 1-877- 435-7021. It’s operational from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
