Mayor Wants Higher Water Rates, Lower Sewer Rates

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is calling for a reduction in city sewer rates. The reduction is part of a settlement of a lawsuit filed by consumer advocates. They say the city overcharged residents and needs to make amends. Sanders says the sewer rebate will be noticeable.

Sanders: The typical single family residential customer would see an immediate reduction of about $3.25 on their bill. This reduction would continue each year for the next four years.

Sanders also wants an increase in city water rates. Rates would go up by $1.40 a month for the average family. The San Diego County Water Authority's cost for imported water is up, and Sanders says that cost needs to be passed on to customers.

City officials will debate the proposals in October.
