DuPont Teaches Engineering to 4th Graders -- With Lifesavers

Fourth graders at a Southeast San Diego school got some hands-on engineering experience on Wednesday. Chemical company DuPont helped about a hundred youngsters at Walter Porter Elementary build and race cars made of lifesavers and straws.

Engineer Kwa King says the event aims to get kids to consider a future in science.

King : I think it's very important to interest them when they're young. The main thing that we want to do, like I said, is exposure. So the earlier we expose them the more time they have to think about their careers.

The kids lined up on the floor and blew on their cars to push them across the finish line. Thien Lieu says he built his car with a mast to catch the wind.

Lieu : So you have to at least somehow make it as aerodynamic and it traps the air and doesn't let go.

Mayor Jerry Sanders was in attendance. He said San Diego science and tech industries are looking to young people for the next generation of researchers and engineers.
