Tom Fudge: Residents of San Marcos are looking at the possible construction of a development called Palomar Station. The 14.3 acre development will have 333 condo units, retail stores and some office space. It would be located right next to a future Sprinter rail station and right across Mission Road from Palomar College.
That may sound like a good combination. But there are critics of the proposal who focus on a couple of things, such as parking, traffic and the development's location in what has been an industrial zone. One study has shown that, under extreme conditions, some people who live in Palomar Station could be exposed to cancer-causing fumes. But earlier this month, the San Marcos city council approved the development plan, saying the health risk was too remote to take seriously.
Many people, including the President of Palomar College have spoken in favor of Palomar Station. But opponents are still at work, seeking a voter referendum to spot it in its tracks.
