Baja Gov. Candidate May Have Greased Support With City Means

School supplies and cooking oil are at the heart of the latest electoral scuffle in Tijuana. State investigators are looking into whether PRI alliance candidate Jorge Hank Rhon has used city means to his own political ends. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

State police are guarding warehouses in Tijuana where city officials store boxes of school supplies and cooking essentials like sugar, beans and oil.

City officials routinely give the supplies to Tijuana's low income residents.

However, members of the PAN party suspect Jorge Hank Rhon's PRI gubernatorial campaign has used the materials to grease voters' hands

PAN party principals say people wearing Hank's campaign t-shirts and caps have been seen loading city-owned supplies into PRI party vehicles.

Prosecutors with the state's electoral crimes unit are investigating the allegations.

Late last Friday night, hundreds of state and city police had a tense standoff outside one of the warehouses where state investigators executed a search warrant.
