Assembly Approves Trans Fat Ban in California Restaurants

The California Assembly has narrowly approved a bill that would ban trans fats from California restaurants. The measure by Democrat Tony Mendoza would require eateries to phase out the artery-clogging fats by 2010. He says they pose a real health problem, and that healthier alternatives exist.

Many Republicans opposed the bill, including Assemblyman George Plescia.

Plescia : Why don't we just ban fat people in California? Laughter…I mean, there is this thing called personal responsibility, believe it or not.

A Senate bill that bans the use of trans fats in school cafeterias was also approved on Thursday. Each measure must still be passed by the other house.
