Molecular biologist Craig Venter, the pioneering scientist who mapped the human genome -- and one of UCSD's most famous graduates -- is back in San Diego. We talk to him about his work deciphering the code of life, his current projects, and his plans for a new San Diego institute.

Venter is in town to receive the Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He just finished an around-the-world boat trip to collect DNA samples from the oceans for his next project: making synthetic microbes.
