State to Offer $200k Per-Day Bonus For Swift Fix of Bay Bridge

The State Department of Transportation will offer incentives of $200,000 a day to the contractor who can quickly re-build the 580-connector in the Bay Area.

The State Department of Transportation will offer incentives of $200,000 a day to the contractor who can quickly re-build the 580-connector in the Bay Area.

CalTrans Director Will Kempton says nine construction companies will be offered the chance to bid on the project. The contractor chosen will be given the bonus for each day that is shaved off construction time.

Kempton : In this instance, when you're looking to get a facility opened to traffic as quickly as possible, that's why we do an incentive-based contract -- and that's what this contract will offer in terms of speed.

CalTrans officials want the work finished by June 29th.   The contractor chosen could also be punished for each day the work runs over the deadline with $200,000 a day fines. The contractor is expected to be chosen next Monday. $20 million has been authorized for the project.

The 580 was damaged on Sunday when a tanker crashed and caught fire. That part of the roadway collapsed onto the 80-to-880 connector below. The Governor announced Wednesday that the 880-connector will be repaired within seven to ten days.
