Local Businesses Joining National Coalition for Health Care Reform

San Diego's Bumble Bee Foods has joined a national coalition of businesses that wants to reform the country's troubled health care system. Coalition members will push their ideas to lawmakers in Washington and Sacramento this week. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

Some of the nation's largest companies are in the coalition, including PepsiCo.

The group supports the idea of requiring everyone to have health insurance. It also believes those who can't afford coverage should get help from the government.

Chris Lischewski heads up Bumble Bee Foods. He says reforming the healthcare system is crucial to his company's survival.

Lischewski : And as we continue to experience double-digit increases in healthcare, we're basically going to move. We're gonna be out of business in the United States in the next five to ten years if our costs keep accelerating like they are today.

The coalition supports some of the elements of Governor Schwarzenegger's healthcare reform package, but it's not endorsing his plan. The coalition calls the proposal a good start.
