California Secretary of State Debra Bowen is moving forward with a review of voting systems in all 58 counties. She's asking University of California computer scientists to try to hack into machines to find out if they're secure.

Bowen says people still have questions about the reliability and safety of voting machines. She planned the review before the Presidential primary was moved to February, but says she's moving ahead despite the tighter timeline.

Bowen : We cannot simply say that we won't do the review because we have to conduct an election. That would be akin to having the pilot tell us well, you know, we need an on-time departure, so I'm just not going to review the mechanical systems or do a walk-around. And you know, if that happened, I'd get off the plane.

Bowen says the review will start next week and should be finished by August. Some county registrars have expressed concern about the timing. If problems are found with any of the systems, Bowen has said she could de-certify them, or ask for new safeguards.
