San Diego gas prices continue to hover near record territory. The Utility Consumer's Action Network says Prices peaked at $3.50 a gallon last week -- and they've only retreated about a nickel a gallon.

The high prices and profits around the country prompted Triple-A to ask for a federal investigation this week. It’s an unusual step for the nation's largest automobile club.

Anita Mangles works for the Western State's Petroleum Association. She says the call for a probe is not new.

Mangles : The government has been very responsive to legislators and other organizations who have asked for investigations in the past. Over the last year or so, and especially in the wake of hurricane Katrina, there have probably been, oh gosh, a dozen investigations.

Mangles says all of them have cleared the oil industry of wrongdoing. California energy officials blame refinery problems for the high prices here.
