Study Finds Big Labor Demand For Health Professionals in California

A new study reveals California has a major shortage of health professionals like dental hygienists and radiology technicians. The report says the state just isn't producing enough graduates to fill current or future needs. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

The study finds in most allied health professions including nursing, California produces fewer graduates than job openings every year.

The non-profit Campaign for College Opportunity commissioned the report. Executive director Abdi Soltani says the shortages could affect the health of all Californians.

Soltani : These are the people who really deliver the care. And without enough of these professionals, we're going to face rising costs, we're going to have to wait longer for our care, and ultimately the quality of our care will suffer as well.

Soltani says California needs to expand programs in community colleges and universities. And he says the state should offer more financial aid and other support for students.
