Voter Registration Cards May Be Revamped

It may have been awhile since you've seen one of California's voter registration cards.  But they've grown more cluttered, and the Secretary of State wants to change that.  From Sacramento, Marianne Russ explains.

Here's what California Secretary of State Debra Bowen thinks of the current registration card:

Debra Bowen: It actually reminded me more of a tax form, which is not my favorite thing to fill out.

That's why she's set up a working group to recommend ways to make the card more user-friendly.

Bowen: We have 37 million people -- 23 million are eligible to register -- around 16 million are registered, and we could do far better than that.

Bowen says it's one of several challenges to getting more people registered.

Bowen: I know the card has served as a barrier for people registering to vote.

Kim Alexander with the California Voter Foundation is part of the working group.  She says over the years, new sections have been tacked on to the card and it needs to be simplified.  The group will have recommendations to Bowen by the end of the year.
