California Unveils Plan For New Tech Education Framework

A new blueprint for career technical education programs in California was released Thursday. It's designed to make these programs meet state academic standards. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Career technical programs teach students valuable job skills, and prepares them for college. Until now there hasn't been a career tech framework for public schools. The result has been a hodgepodge of vocational classes that may not satisfy state standards.

San Diego school district official Lynn McConnville says that's going to change. She says career tech is the hottest education trend because it’s producing results.

McConnville : People are looking at career technical education as a high school reform method, keeping students engaged, keeping their learning relevant, preparing students for the workforce and post-secondary options.

California education officials hope the state's plan will encourage more universities to count career tech classes on college transcripts.
