Opponents of Blackwater's proposal to build a training camp in East County plan to stage a rally in Potrero on Sunday. Blackwater USA faced a tough crowd in Washington this week over its shootings in Iraq. And the reception isn't going to be any warmer in San Diego County this weekend. KPBS reporter Amita Sharma has details.
The weekend-long event starts off with a series of workshops. Sessions include detailed plans of Blackwater's training center project for Potrero. Organizers also plan to discuss war profiteering. Opponents of the training camp say it will disturb Potrero's quiet way of life and ruin the habitat for rare animals. They also dislike Blackwater's conduct in Iraq.
Protest coordinator Carol Jahnkow hopes the event attracts people from across the county.
Jahnkow : It's important for people who don't live in Potrero to come out there and support people who will be experiencing the direct environmental and lifestyle impacts if this facility goes through.
San Diego County Supervisors aren't expected to vote on the Blackwater project until at least late next year.
