New Bills Aim to Mitigate Strain at Home For War Vets

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed nine bills to benefit members of the military and their families. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Coming home from deployment may be a little sweeter, thanks to a new law that requires employers to give 10 days unpaid leave to the husband or wife of military returning from active duty.

21-year Camp Pendleton Marine Corporal Nathaniel Sapp has already experienced the difficulty of readjusting after one deployment. He is pleased the law will allow his wife to spend more time with him after the next one.

Sapp : The 10 days, I think is a really good idea, because you learn to get used to each other again, being around each other all the time. Easing back into life in America, but you've got your spouse there to support you, and you're there to support her, and make up for some lost time.

Other new bills signed by the governor include giving soldiers, sailors and marines more protection from predatory lenders, and also priority enrollment at California's Universities.

The laws go into effect immediately.
