The flu season is approaching, and health officials say it's not too soon for people to protect themselves by getting a flu shot. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

Health officials admit last year's flu season was quite mild in San Diego. But that doesn't mean this year's will follow suit.

Adrienne Collins Yancy is chief of the County's Immunization Branch. She says the flu shot is recommended for children under five, people with chronic conditions, and adults fifty and over.

Yancy : But if you're a caregiver of any of those populations, if you live with a pregnant woman, if you have a small child in your home, or if you live with elderly persons -- to protect them, you should also receive the flu vaccine, so that you do not bring it into the home.

Officials say there should be an ample supply of the vaccine this year. It will be available later this month at some county clinics and local pharmacies. The cost will range from $10 to $30.
