Tom Fudge: Five years ago, San Diegans voted on whether to make it against the law to drink alcohol at the beach. Most California beaches have prohibited drinking. But it's still allowed on San Diego beaches. In 2002, local voters rejected an attempt to make it illegal. But the vote was close. The forces opposed to an alcohol ban won by just two percent.
Now, Kevin Faulconer , the councilman who represents most of the beach areas in San Diego, is in favor of the ban. His mind on this subject was made up due to an incident this last Labor Day. That's when riot police had to come to Pacific Beach to quell a disturbance, blamed on intoxicated sunbathers. Today, Faulconer will raise the issue in front of the city council's public safety committee.
The San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee will be discussing proposals to ban alcohol on local beaches today (Oct. 10) at 2 p.m. at the Council Chambers.
