Local School Struggling with Overcrowding, Teacher Turnover

A group of teachers at Mann Middle School in City Heights say classes are overcrowded and teacher turnover is at an all-time high. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Mann was broken up into three smaller schools about three years ago. The idea was give inner-city students more personalized instruction and attention at each school. But now teachers say they have more than 35 students in one class -- way over the legal limit. In fact, one teacher said she has 44 kids.

The group of educators say many experienced teachers have left because of the working conditions. Donna Marvel says the district has to stop the bleeding.

Marvel: We have long term subs that have walked out and left us hanging on a daily basis, we have classrooms that aren't covered by certificated teachers.

District officials say Mann has undergone a number of leadership changes which could be contributing to the problem. Teachers say they're not getting the funding they were promised as an under-performing schools. They're demanding a visit from top district officials within two weeks. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
