Progress Made, But Firefighters Still Battling Hot Spots

Firefighters are making rapid progress on the wildfires in San Diego County, where more than 330,000 acres have burned. But hot spots continue to be a threat.

The largest fires in San Diego County -- the Harris and Witch Creek fires -- are still burning as firefighters work on several hot spots. The Witch Creek fire is churning its way toward the rural town of Julian. The town nestled in rolling hills is filled with dry vegetation. 3,000 residents were under mandatory evacuation. Firefighters are worried that west winds would accelerate the blaze uphill toward the town. At nearly 200,000 acres, the Witch Creek fire is the fourth-largest fire in California history.

Despite the hotspots, Bill Pollock with the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services says firefighters are close to getting the upper hand on all the wildfires in the county.

Pollock : Things are winding down, we're still not out of the woods yet. There's still a lot of work to be done.

He says the end may be in sight in a few days. More than 1800 homes have been destroyed or damaged from the wildfires in the county.
