Hundreds of San Diego middle school kids didn't have to change schools this year. That's because a handful of campuses tacked on sixth, seventh and eighth grades this year. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Seven elementary schools in San Diego expanded this year to make room for middle school students. It’s part of an overall plan to offer more middle school options to families.
Fernando Hernandez is the principal at Perkins Elementary in Barrio Logan, that's one of the schools that made the change. He says the students are comfortable and ready to learn.
Hernandez : We know these students and they know us. They would have gone to a middle school -- perhaps it would have been a rougher transition. And here they are just continuing where they left off when they left fifth grade, so it's a very positive thing for them.
More than 60 new sixth grade students are attending Perkins this year. The overall K-to-8 plan will cost the district $1.2 million.
