Governor's Office Wants Age Minimum to Buy Ultra-Violent Games

The Schwarzenegger Administration is appealing a district court ruling that struck down a law banning the sale of ultra-violent video games to underage children. The legislation was challenged on first amendment rights and that the definitions of violent video games were too vague.

The governor's Legal Affairs Secretary Andrea Hoch says those definitions were narrowly tailored in order to weather any constitutional challenges.

Hoch : We're not just looking at violent video games, we're looking at what we call ultra violent video games, and there's definitions in the statute that define what that is.   We're talking about mutilation, torture, cruel and heinous acts that are more than just violence.

Hoch says the administration hopes to win its appeal by also using studies that show a link between playing such video games and violent behavior. Schwarzenegger signed the legislation back in 2005 that was authored by Democrat Leland Yee.
