Six men will face trial in state court for allegedly kidnapping and torturing a Mexican businessman in Chula Vista. Authorities believe the defendants may target members of Tijuana's Arellano Felix drug cartel. Meanwhile, law enforcement sources say the victim is the target of a federal investigation. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

After five days of extensive preliminary hearings, Superior Court Judge Charles Rodgers decided there is enough evidence in the case to proceed to trial.

Rodgers: I am mindful that evidence has shown me that the men in this room participated in different ways. Some of them appear the have been leaders. Some appear to have been helpers of followers. However, the evidence does establish that all the defendants are co-principles.

During the hearings, a picture was painted in which two of the defendants allegedly acted as bosses. The victim, Eduardo Gonzalez Tostado testified three others took care of him, fed him well and empathized with him.

Law enforcement authorities believe the defendants are members of a kidnap and murder crew that operates in Southern San Diego.

Law enforcement sources won't say why the victim is the target of a federal investigation. Gozalez disavows any ties to Tijuana's Arellano Felix drug cartel.
