William Shakespeare and His Merry Band of Skeptics

I can't believe

this debate continues to thrive: who is the author of Shakespeare's plays? Is it the Bard? Impossible, skeptics say. He was raised in an illiterate household. There is no record of payment to a Will Shakespeare for any of his plays. He just wasn't aristocratic enough.

The candidates bandied about as the "real" Bard are Francis Bacon , or the more popular choice, the Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere . Famous doubters of poor Will as author have included Mark Twain, Orson Welles, Sir John Gielgud, and Charlie Chaplin.

Respected Shakespearian actor Derek Jacobi and Mark Rylance , former artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe theater in London have introduced a Declaration of Reasonable Doubt About the Identity of William Shakespeare . You can sign a petition of doubt here , if you count yourself among the skeptics.

Despite the prestigious company, I'm not buying it.
