More than 5,000 people spent part of their weekend picking up trash in San Diego County. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has more on California Coastal Cleanup Day.
The cleanup is the largest volunteer event in the county. Volunteers collected trash from local coastlines, beaches, bays and inland areas.
Bruce Reznik is the executive director of San Diego Coastkeeper.
Reznik : We'll probably have around 6,000 volunteers which will be a record for Coastal Cleanup Day, we're very excited about that. And I'm expecting that the trash total will grow pretty significantly as we get some of our inland sites in. And I don't think we'll get quite as much as last year, but I think we'll probably end up well over 100,000 pounds of debris.
The cleanup included an underwater dive site in San Diego Bay, where 400 pounds of trash was hauled out of the water. Some of the more unusual items found: a roller skating trophy, panty hose, a lawn mower and action figure with a compass glued onto it.
