San Diego-based Project Concern International has won a federal grant designed to improve the health of pregnant women and their babies. The Healthy Start project will target low-income women in parts of San Diego and the South Bay. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
People who live in the targeted areas of the county have less access to healthcare than others in the region. And some aspects of their health tend to be poorer, too.
Ann Fitzgerald will be coordinating the Healthy Start project. She says there are lots of local programs that provide great services. But there are still gaps.
Fitzgerald : And this program is funded to be able to help fill in those gaps, and provide continuity of care to the moms, or the expectant moms from the time they're pregnant, to when the baby's two years old.
Fitzgerald says the project will try to improve access to prenatal care. A number of local providers will take part in the effort, including Scripps Mercy Hospital and La Maestra Community Clinic in City Heights.
