4,100 Freshman Begin Classes at UCSD

A record number of students will be attending UC San Diego this fall semester. Many of them moved into their new campus digs over the weekend. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

More than 4,100 UCSD students this fall are incoming freshman—1,600 are transfer students. University officials are trying to keep students here for the long haul by breathing new life into college life. They say more activities and events will take place on campus this fall, there's more student and faculty housing, and dining halls will have late night hours. Vice Chancellor of Student Affiars Penny Rue:

Rue: We certainly don't want to change our image of as a university known for its extremely rigorous academic experience, but on the other hand, its also a place with a lively student life that I think has been undervalued in that area.

Rue says they've made sure there's enough student housing to go around this year. Last year the university underestimated how many students wanted to live on campus.
