San Diego law enforcement officers hope free public transit service will help keep more people alive this New Year's Eve. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
It normally costs about $2.50 to take the bus or trolley in San Diego. But beginning at 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve, public transit in the most heavily trafficked areas of the city will be free. Free trolley service will also continue into the early morning hours of New Year's Day.
The California Highway Patrol's Steve Lykins says it all part of a larger effort to prevent deaths and injuries.
Lykins: Last year on New Year's Eve, the California Highway Patrol in our jurisdiction experienced five deaths as a result of driving under the influence. We do not want to see the same tragedies happen, year in and year out.
Transit officials say they bring-in about $15,000 worth in transit fees on New Year's Eve. The Sycuan Band of Indians is covering the bill.
