San Diegans with Political Ambitions Gearing Up for June Election

With the Presidential primary behind us, San Diegans with local political aspirations are gearing up for the June primary election.  Wednesday was the first day to take out papers to run for office at City Hall. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Nineteen people showed up at the San Diego city clerk's office to take out papers to run for office. There will be four city council seats open, as the incumbents are termed out, plus the mayor will be challenged and the city's attorney's job is on the line.

Those jumping into the race have to collect signatures from 100 valid registered voters and turn in their papers within a month to qualify.

Many of those who pulled papers today have already been actively fund-raising for their campaigns.

Six people are potential candidates to take Aguirre's job, four have now declared they'll challenge Jerry Sanders for mayor. Seven candidates have already gone public about their intentions to run for Toni Atkins's mid-city district, and five want a shot at Jim Madaffer's Tierra Santa territory. There are three each running to replace Scott Peters in La Jolla and Brian Maieschein in Rancho Bernardo.

Altogether 28 people have already filed the paperwork necessary to start raising money for San Diego city office. And the election season has hardly begun.
