S.D. County Supervisors Consider Ending Local Emergency

San Diego County supervisors will soon decide whether to end the local emergency declared in the midst of October's wildfires. County officials say recovery lasted for months after the flames were extinguished. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has details.

San Diego County is still eligible for state and federal financial aid. County supervisors have voted five times to extend the emergency since October.

Ron Lane is head of the Office of Emergency Services. He says the rain has complicated recovery because of flooding and mudslides.

Lane: When we proclaimed a local emergency, we wanted to leave it in place until all the hazards were completely taken care of, and the one we've been waiting on is the debris removal, which is both an environmental and a health hazard, and we completed the debris-removal program last week.

The county's chief administrative officer recommends terminating the local emergency. San Diego County may still be eligible for reimbursement under a statewide state of emergency.
