San Diego school district officials have decided which charter schools will get a piece of district-owned property in time for next school year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Nineteen existing charter schools were vying for district space.
Three of them have been offered a new piece of property within the district. Fifteen have been allowed to stay or expand on their campus. Those charters include a German-language academy, a college prep school and a collection of small schools in Barrio Logan that cater to Latino students.
Under Proposition 39, school districts in California must give charter schools space if they satisfy a number of requirements.
Only one of the existing charters in San Diego Unified did not net those requirements. The Health Sciences High School and Middle College was denied space because charter school officials failed to give detailed information about student enrollment projections.
School officials and charter organizers will now review the district's recommendations. Then its up to the charters to accept or reject the district's final offer.
