High School Seniors Rush to Meet New CSU Application Deadline

High school seniors are rushing to meet a new deadline to apply to seven California State University campuses. Normally high school seniors have all summer long to apply. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.

The final deadline to apply to the seven campuses was in August. But CSU officials have moved up that deadline to March 1st.

San Diego State and the rest of the CSU’s 15 campuses have already stopped taking applications.

University officials say the governor's proposed budget cuts are prompting the early deadlines. They say a potential loss of state funding means fewer professors and classes for students in the fall semester.

CSU’s Paul Browning says they made the change in January and have been trying to get the message out since then.

Browning : It’s unfortunate for them if they do miss a deadline and we hope we that can recoup some of these funds. And if they did miss the deadline that they apply next year because we are hoping for a better situation.

Browning estimates about 10,000 students will be shut-out of the CSU campuses this fall semester.
