Chargers Still Fighting For Feasible Stadium Site

The San Diego Chargers have finished playing football for the season, but the team is still fighting to find a feasible site for a new stadium. Tonight, Chargers' spokesman Mark Fabiani presents the City of Chula Vista with plans for two more studies. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Fabiani says the Chargers' public meetings in Chula Vista suggest residents still have questions about a new stadium in their town. But he believes they are generally open to the possibility.

The Chargers now plan to launch two more studies

The first is to examine if it is possible to finance a stadium in Chula Vista privately.

Fabiani says the second study is about the power plant that currently occupies the Bay front site.

Fabiani : To determine whether it is possible to come up with a firm shut down date for the power plant, because if it's not then the sites not really available and there's no point in focusing on it.

The Chula Vista city council wants the power plant removed.

But California's Independent System Operator, which operates the state's electric grid, has ruled the plant is an essential part of the region's energy mix. That means it can’t be pulled down till an alternative source of power is found.
