Hundreds of San Diego Firefighters Battling Nothern Calif. Wildfires

Several hundred San Diego firefighters are helping wage the battle against wildfires in Central and Northern California. CAL FIRE officials say nearly 19,000 firefighters are working to contain the flames from some 1,400 fires.  CAL FIRE's Roxanne Provoznik says it is not unheard of for this area to be quite while fires rage in the rest of the state.

Provoznik: Back in the mid 80's, around 1986 and 1987 we had the same situation. It was very quiet here in San Diego and they had a big lightning storm go through Northern California and produce similar results. So it doesn't happen that often but it’s not unheard of.

Provoznik says the first group of San Diego firefighters to head north should be returning home soon. Other crews from this area will replace them. She says San Diego based crews got help from up north during the county's 2007 and 2003 firestorms. Now, she says they are returning the favor.
