The first-ever audit of San Diego County's food safety program has concluded the county does an "excellent" job overall inspecting businesses but there is room for improvement.

The first-ever audit of San Diego County's food safety program has concluded the county does an "excellent" job overall inspecting businesses but there is room for improvement.

The audit by the National Environmental Health Association finds the county has been flexible in responding to crises such as last year's fires but needs to crack down on unlicensed food sellers and update its data management system.

The audit, which cost the county nearly $50,000, makes eight recommendations. They include clarifying the language on restaurant grade placards and computerizing what have been handwritten inspection forms.
