Demaio Disclosures In Question

A freshly elected San Diego city council member has come under fire for failing to adequately disclose the source of his income prior to running for office. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Carl Demaio ran on a platform of more open and efficient government and easily won a seat in June to represent Scripps Ranch and Rancho Bernardo. But a complaint has sparked a warning letter from the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission, requiring Demaio to disclosure the source of income to a company he sold just before running for office.

Demaio says he filled out his statement of economic interest with advice from the city’s Ethics Commission.

Demaio: They told me how to fill out the form they continue to tell me the form was filled out properly. I’ve asked the ethics commission .. work it out with the FCCP and whatever the final determination is is the information I’ll provide .

Demaio’s company, The Performance Institute, made him millions by training government agencies how to be more efficient by outsourcing. Demaio says there are no legal requirements to disclose government clients in financial statements.
