West Nile Virus Activity Picks Up

San Diego County Health officials say they've never seen so much West Nile virus activity this early in the summer. Officials concede the disease hasn't infected people yet this year…but warn that could change at any time. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

County Health officials have warned the public for years about West Nile virus. Yet the disease hasn't hit people very hard in San Diego.

Last year had the most local cases: 15. All of the victims recovered. This year no one's gotten sick yet.

Chris Conlan is with the County Department of Vector Control . He says there's still cause for concern.

Chris Conlan : You never know exactly who's gonna be the one who's gonna get it really bad, versus somebody who might get over it with very little complication. So the best we can do is monitor it, let people know what's going on, try to get people to take precautions.

Nationwide this year, there have been only 28 reported human cases of West Nile virus, and no deaths.
