Some gas stations in Tijuana have run out of gas. They've had to close while they wait for more supplies. This comes after diesel shortages in the region earlier this month. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Regular and premium gas supplies have run dry at dozens of stations across Tijuana during the last few days.
Joaquin Avina is President of Tijuana's Association of Gas Station owners.
He estimates about 90 of the 116 stations he represents shut down at some point during the weekend.
Avina says Mexico's national oil company, Pemex, has since made some deliveries. Though, he says 35 of his stations remain closed.
Joaquin Avina (translated from Spanish): Pemex officials say they used up all their resources, like delivery trucks, to stop the diesel shortage. But that's just another excuse. I suspect Pemex is restricting gas supply to the border region because officials are under the false perception that US drivers are taking advantage of the subsidized price.
A gallon of gas in Tijuana costs about $2.80.
The Mexican government's gas subsidy costs the country about $20 billion a year.
