Independent Contributions Boost Individual Campaigns

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are pouring into a last minute flurry of spending on candidates before tomorrow’s Primary.   I ndependent contributions  from organizations like the San Diego Republican and Democratic Parties have played a significant role in the city wide campaigns. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

San Diego city  races are officially non partisan but at last count, the  San Diego Republican Party has raised almost a million dollars for campaigning, and the Democratic Party has raised about $160 thousand.

In the mayor’s race, the local GOP has thrown well over $200 thousand into the fray to support incumbent Jerry Sanders. That hasn’t evened the financial odds much. Sanders’ own campaign has raised about half a million, compared to the 4 million businessman Steve Francis has spent of his own personal fortune.

In the key 11 th District City Council race, more money has been raised by independent contributors than by the candidates’ own campaigns.

Democrat Marti Emerald and Republican April Boling have each raised over $100,000.

But while Emerald has benefitted from an extra $100,000 in Democratic and labor contributions, Boling is backed by more than $200,000 in Republican and business spending.
