SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Election officials are reporting a slow turnout in today’s low-key primary.
There are no statewide races for elective office and just two ballot initiatives, both of which would restrict government's use of eminent domain.
Steve Weir, head of the statewide registrars’ association, says he has heard of no problems at the polls -- except that voters aren’t showing up. He says turnout among California’s 16.1 million registered voters may be even lighter than his projection of 32 percent.
Several areas throughout the state are expected to see slightly higher voter interest because of hotly-contested local races.
Mayoral races in Sacramento and San Diego have drawn interest, as have a handful of state legislative races.
