City Heights Farmers Market Opens for Business This Saturday

The community of City Heights will be getting a taste of locally grown farm-fresh produce this weekend. The area’s first certified farmers market opens for business this Saturday morning. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

It’s hard to find locally-grown produce in the inner city. The farmers market in City Heights has been in the planning stages for more than a year. Eleven vendors will take part initially. Organizers expect that number to grow in the coming weeks.

Amina Sheik is a health educator at the City Heights Wellness Center. She says up until now, the closest farmers market has been in Hillcrest.

Sheik : So if you don’t have a car and you have to go there, it’s not accessible. But this will be so good that they can just walk and just buy their own produce.

The City Heights farmers market will be the first in the county to accept food stamps. Sheik says that's important, because many local residents depend on food stamps.
