The San Diego Unified School District is introducing a new, user-friendly budget book in time for next school year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The new book is the result of a year-long process to make the district's spending plan more transparent and less confusing. Last year the school board initially rejected the budget because they say it was vague.

School board president Katherine Nakamura researched school budgets across the country in an effort to a craft a new one for San Diego.

The district's Jack Brandais says all the information is now at your fingertips.

Brandais: Well if you flip to page 232, it’s a profile of Stanley Middle School. And then there's a little snapshot of their budget that tells you what programs they have, where the money comes, and how its being spent. So you can find out Stanley Middle School's budget is six-point-three million dollars.

Brandais says the book will be updated based on how budget talks in Sacramento. District officials say it comes at time when parents and teachers are worried about their school's financial future. The new budget book is on the district's website: www.sandi.net
