Blackwater USA today has dropped its controversial plan to build a military and police training facility in the East County community of Potrero. KPBS reporter Amita Sharma has more.
Hundreds of Potrero residents objected to the training center. But Blackwater insists it's not caving into public pressure.
Instead company spokesman Brian Bonfiglio said the firm is scrapping plans for the 220-acre training camp because it would have been too expensive to meet environmental standards governing noise.
Bonfiglio : The noise ordinance is pretty much non discretionary and black and white if you will and the mitigation measures we would have had to take would have been too costly.
Opponents had said the project would create too much noise, traffic and stretch the area’s water supply. Late last year they successfully recalled of the local planning group who favored Blackwater’s plan.
