Theremin Featured by San Diego Chamber Orchestra

Tom Fudge: Let me ask the folks who are about my age and a little older to retrieve a pop-culture memory from the storehouses of their brains. I'm talking about a T.V. soap opera that was on in the late '60s, early '70s. It was called Dark Shadows . The protagonist was a vampire named Barnabous Collins. Yes, it was a vampire soap opera, if you can believe that.

OK. If you ever saw it, try now to remember the eerie theme music that introduced the show. The instrument that played the melody was, and is, called a theremin. And playing the tunes of spooky, sci-fi T.V. shows is the thing, for which, most of us know this electronic instrument. But there are musicians that take it little more seriously than that. In fact, the San Diego Chamber Orchestra is now performing a March series of concerts that feature a concerto for theremin.

The San Diego Chamber Orchestra presents their March series " Surprise, Surprise " featuring the World Premiere of Concerto for Theremin on March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe Friday, and again on March 14, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Cathedral in Downtown San Diego.
