San Diego State Overenrolled, Over Budget

San Diego State Overenrolled, Over Budget

San Diego State University, the county's largest university, is overenrolled. SDSU enrolls 31,590 full-time students. That's about 2,000 more than the university expected. If that overenrollment continues next year, SDSU faces a gap in what the state will pay for.

Universities work like the airlines by intentionally "overbooking." Not everyone shows up, so SDSU has to guess at the magic enrollment number that keeps classes full. But this year, officials say everyone essentially showed up. An unusually high number of students met admission requirements, and an unusually high number of freshmen did not drop out after the fall.

As the Cal State system faces deep cuts in the state budget, SDSU is not optimistic about getting more money for more students.
