State Lawmaker Pushes For Mandatory Climate Change Education

One State lawmaker wants to require “climate change” to be taught in California schools. Democrat Joe Simitian says his measure would instruct the Board of Education and the Department of Education

One State lawmaker wants to require “climate change” to be taught in California schools. Democrat Joe Simitian says his measure would instruct the Board of Education and the Department of Education to handle the specifics -- but it would guarantee students are exposed to the phenomenon.

Simitian : There’d nothing in our curriculum right now that requires that climate change be a part of the curriculum, and so there’s no guarantee, K-12, that a youngster’s ever going to get the kind of scientific background on climate change that we hope he would or should by the time he graduates.

Simitian says he’s been surprised at the reaction to the bill. Some Republicans have come out strongly against it. In a statement, GOP Senator Tom McClintock said he couldn’t support the measure because there was no requirement that the curriculum about global warming be science-based and balanced.

The bill passed the Senate on a party-line vote. It’s now in the Assembly.  Governor Schwarzenegger has not weighed in on the measure.
