Sex and the City

Sex and the City
The girls are back in Sex and the City -The Movie! (New Line Cinema)

All right, I need to be clear upfront that I am probably not the best person to be reviewing Sex and the City. I was never fond of Sarah Jessica Parker and every time I saw footage from the HBO show it made me cringe. Plus as someone who brought Rue Morgue magazine (with an article on a French horror film about a woman trying to cut the child out of another pregnant woman's body) as reading material to the press screening of Sex and the City , I simply may not have overlapping interests with the show's fan base. So in the interest of fair play I will be inviting my KPBS colleague and Jacobs Fellow Nicole Lozare to contribute a fan's perspective next week. But since not everyone out there is a fan of the show, I do feel it's just as fair to convey the non-fan perspective as well so here goes...

Well I agreed to see this film because both my daughter and grand-daughter wished to see it. Not having ever bothered to watch the series I thought it was a cross between Pretty Woman & cat walks on TV. But as an avid reader I was intriqued in the book Carrie took to bed with her pearls,(actually you'd wake up with poppet sized marks on your neck and breasts, not at all comfy)..Oh and of course she was in bed with Mr Noth who I actually like to see in crime drama's & I wouldn't mind catching him in an elevator as you say in the USA! Back to the book. Where can I obtain a copy? I thought the letter which Carrie read out was quite OK!! So being the dopey creature that I am I have searched Google, Ask et al to no avail. Love some info from some one please!!!!

Aaron -- so cool you knew the French horror film! Annie -- apparently you are not the only asking about that book. The best I could find was this Yahoo answers site: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080530172040AA98zn6 Or you could browse the catalog of the New York Public Library where she presumably checked the book out from. Maybe a call to the librarian could uncover the answer: http://www.nypl.org/books/ Thanks for the comments.

The book does not exist! I read in another article that it was created for the movie. It may have been inspired by another book, though: Love Letters of Great Men and Women by C.H. Charles.

Some interesting feedback on your review over at the Sex and the City board on IMDb. Thread title: "Do any women hate this film?"

I have to admit I am not a fan of this series, but was actually invited to a private screening at a studio head's home before the movie premiered. A lot of A+++ actresses and their hubbies were in attendance, and they seemed to enjoy it. Unfortunately, I thought the movie was completely dreadful. The women are inane, and not a single thoughtful or insightful remark about anything (much less about relationships) comes out of any of their mouths. Their values are so incredibly superficial that they are not empowered, but just caught up in brand sponsorship and the excesses of shallow materialism. I felt that this movie sets back women. As someone who surrounds himself with really intelligent and achieving women, there is not one in this crowd of Hollywood make-believe that even touches on a modern emancipated woman, who is not only feminine, but a high achiever, a caring and loving parent, and someone who has their moral compass pointing in the right direction. The arrows of these women only point into themselves, not outwards. It's all about me. The whole marriage issue is a farce. If you have to ask yourself the question of whether you should or shouldn't get married - then don't. Simple as that. You will know when the time is right, when you don't have to debate the issue. Ugggh.

Thanks for the help re: the poem/book (prop) in Sex in the City.Interestingly I have spoken with many colleagues/friends in Education who agree that the film was well whatever...But their interest was piqued by the so called book. So now I am going on line to Barnes & Noble to purchase a copy as Amazon UK has never heard of this book?! Oops. Regards everyone. Any other good films winging their way to the UK?

Anne- yes it's funny how the film has stirred interest in a book that may not even exist. If you're in the UK, let me know if a film called Late Night Shopping is available. It's a couple years old and it never got released here in the US but I thought it was a delight. Lacey- thanks for letting me know about the IMBD discussion, I checked it out but none of the comments prompted me to change my mind. Although I might considering amending my comment about the women buying clothes and shoes that are too expensive for them. That referred to Jennifer Hudson's character. The rest of the women could afford the items but I would question whether that was money well spent. and Al S -- thanks for your comments, I think they are dead on. I find SATC as empowering as Charlie's Angels, in fact maybe even less so. But at least it sounds like the screening environemnt might have been fun! Thanks to all for partaking in the discussion.

I am trying to identify one of the framed art pieces that Carrie had by her front door. It looks like a figure with dark hair flipped to the sides, red legs and a semi-circle body with alternating black and white sections. Can anyone help? I want this piece for a special spot in my house and I can't figure out what/who it is! If you can help, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
